The 2001 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) is the most current inventory of the nation's daily and long-distance travel. This survey combined the NPTS, a data series collected since 1969 by the FHWA and focused on daily travel, and the ATS (American Travel Survey) which collects information on longer-distance trips. The preliminary data is scheduled for release in January 2003. A workshop and roll-out of the NHTS 2001 is being planned for Sunday, January 12th (1:30-5:00 PM) at the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board. The data will also be available on the web, and updated according to the following schedule.

January 2003 - Preliminary data released (national sample with daily trips only).

This preliminary release will include weighted data representing the nation's daily travel. The data will be available on the NPTS data series website with a User's Guide and the on-line analysis tool at: www-cta.ornl.gov/npts

Spring 2003 - Second release (national sample with daily and long-distance trips).

The second release is the full continuum of travel for the nation, including daily and longer-distance (over 50 miles from home) travel. The reporting period for long distance travel was a 28-day recall period with the travel day as the last day.

Summer 2003 � The final, full data set is released for public use.

The final release includes all national data, daily and long-distance travel, plus the additional samples from the nine add-on areas correctly weighted and edited to represent the nation�s travel. Published results begin to be released with the final dataset.
