I recently looked into this, and learned that the 1980 UZA boundaries were
never digitized by the Census. You might check with other agencies in your
region to see if it was done independently.

I know that the USGS made an effort to work on Urban areas for 1980, but these
may have been different from Census urbanized areas. I think the USGS data
is documented in the national atlas for geospatial data. The website is:

Update on the Status of the 2001 National Household Travel Survey
The 2001 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) is the most current inventory of the nation's daily and long-distance travel. This survey combined the NPTS, a data series collected since 1969 by the FHWA and focused on daily travel, and the ATS (American Travel Survey) which collects information on longer-distance trips. The preliminary data is scheduled for release in January 2003. A workshop and roll-out of the NHTS 2001 is being planned for Sunday, January 12th (1:30-5:00 PM) at the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board. The data will also be available on the web, and updated according to the following schedule.
Schedule of Data Release:
January 2003 - Preliminary data released (national sample with daily trips only).
This preliminary release will include weighted data representing the nation's daily travel. The data will be available on the NPTS data series website with a User's Guide and the on-line analysis tool at: www-cta.ornl.gov/npts
Spring 2003 - Second release (national sample with daily and long-distance trips).
The second release is the full continuum of travel for the nation, including daily and longer-distance (over 50 miles from home) travel. The reporting period for long distance travel was a 28-day recall period with the travel day as the last day.
Summer 2003 * The final, full data set is released for public use.
The final release includes all national data, daily and long-distance travel, plus the additional samples from the nine add-on areas correctly weighted and edited to represent the nation's travel. Published results begin to be released with the final dataset.
Hope to see you at TRB!

Chuck and others,
It looks like March 2003 is the date for the 1-percent PUMS (a few months
delayed). 5-percent is expected to be out summer 2003 according to PUMS

In the notes from the national SDC conference, Jay Waite of the Census
Bureau notes that the "PUMS should come out March 2003 on schedule"
It this the 5-percent PUMS or the 1-percent PUMS? My guess would be the
5-percent PUMS since the 1-percent PUMS is expected by the end of December
2002.
And does the "March 2003" date really mean: "on a flow basis throughout
March 2003"?
Thanks in advance!

CTPP PROFILES (November 12, 2002)
The first data product of the Census Transportation Planning Package 2000
(CTPP2000) is now available. The Census Bureau has prepared profile sheets
for states and counties, which are posted on the American Association of
State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) web page at
http://www.transportation.org/ctpp in both html format and pdf format. The
html format can be read easily into a spreadsheet while the pdf format can
be printed easily. One convenience of these profile sheets is that they
include data from both 1990 and 2000 for some basic characteristics such as
household size, vehicle availability, means of transportation to work, and
travel time to work.
Notes about the data in the CTPP profiles:
1. GEOGRAPHIC LEVEL REPORTED: Data are limited in most cases to state
and county totals. In six states, (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont) data for minor civil divisions (MCD)
are also included.
2. DATA ROUNDING: In CTPP 2000 and other special tabulations from
Census 2000, figures that do not duplicate data released in standard census
products are being rounded. Therefore, certain tables in the CTPP profile
sheets contain rounded numbers. In these tables values from 1 through 7
have been rounded to 4, and values greater than or equal to 8 have been
rounded to the nearest multiple of 5.
3. DATA SOURCE IS DECENNIAL CENSUS LONG FORM: All of the data in the
CTPP Profile are from the "long form." The data will not match the short
form (100% count) data exactly.
4. MICROSOFT EXCEL 97 PROBLEM: There is a display problem when the
CTPP2000 profiles in html format are opened in Microsoft Excel 97. The
problem is that the second column (column B) of the spreadsheet is hidden
from view. To display column B, right-click the mouse over either the
column A or column C header, and choose Unhide from the pop-up menu. This
problem appears to be corrected in later versions of Microsoft Excel.
5. MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION TO WORK: Public transportation includes bus
or trolley bus, streetcar or trolley car, subway or elevated, railroad,
ferryboat, and taxicab. In subsequent CTPP2000 tabulations, taxicab will
generally be included in the "other means" category. However, in the CTPP
profiles taxicab has been included in public transportation, similar to
aggregations used in the Census 2000 demographic profiles.
6. TRAVEL TIME TO WORK: In the 1990 Census (including the CTPP data),
the maximum travel time assigned to any worker was 99 minutes. Workers who
reported travel times of 100 minutes or more were top-coded to 99 minutes
in 1990. The maximum travel time was increased to 200 minutes for Census
2000, thus the 2000 data are more accurate because they include the actual
value for these long trips. The impact of this coding change is that
increases in travel time between 1990 and 2000 are somewhat over-stated.
At the national level, the Census Bureau estimates that about 29% (0.9
minutes) of the 3.1-minute increase in average travel time between 1990 and
2000 is attributable to the coding change.
7. HOUSEHOLD INCOME IN 1999: In a small number of cases, the mean
household income and median household income figures shown in the CTPP2000
profiles differ from those published in other Census 2000 products. These
differences of one dollar are the result of software rounding differences
and hardware numeric precision differences between the two platforms used
to create the products.
8. VEHICLES AVAILABLE: The data in CTPP2000 on vehicles available are
tabulated for households. This is different than in standard census
products, where data on vehicles available are tabulated for housing units.
Although the estimates are usually quite close, the number of housing units
is not always equal to the number of households, because the Census Bureau
calculates weights differently for housing units and households.
Therefore, the distribution of vehicles available shown in CTPP2000 will
not exactly match the distribution (or mean number of vehicles per
household) presented in standard census products from either 1990 or 2000.
For additional information about CTPP2000 products, please see
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ctpp/content.htm or http://www.trbcensus.com

In today's "Census Product Update" (11-7-02) is the news item:
Census Bureau Director to Brief Media on Release of Major Survey.
(Released November 4, 2002)
<http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2002/cb02cr21.html>
The Census Bureau director is in Austin, this morning, to talk about the C2SS and the SS01 (Census 2000 Supplementary Survey and the 2001 Supplementary Survey).
Folks may be interested in the "Press Kit" for this news conference, and Director Kincannon's slides. His first slide is about changes in mean travel time to work for the US, Texas, the Austin, Dallas, Forth Worth, Houston and the San Antonio MSAs.
http://www.census.gov/Press-Release/www/2002/presskit_SS01.html
So, what this means is that the 2001 Supplementary Survey "Wave 1" data is now available, generally for very large areas. I'm starting to check out the data for my Big Counties and Metro Areas, and I recommend starting at the 2000-01 "changes" site, at:
http://www.census.gov/acs/www/Products/Profiles/Chg/2001/SS01/index.htm
In addition to the SS01 data, the Census Products news release mentions the first release of CTPP data:
U.S. Census Bureau Announces Availability of First Census Transportation
Planning Package (CTPP 2000) Data. (Released October 31, 2002)
<http://transportation.org/ctpp/home/default.htm>
Hope this is of interest.
