[CTPP] New report on American Community Survey 2007 data, for San Francisco Bay Area

Hello CTPPers: The detailed 2007 American Community Survey data for journey-to-work and household characteristics was released by the Census Bureau on September 23, 2008. We completed our first report on the ACS 2007 for our region, on October 2nd. The 30 page report is here: http://www.mtc.ca.gov/maps_and_data/datamart/census/ The most interesting finding is a statistically significant (95% CL) increase in transit commuting, 2006 to 2007, from 315,000 to 336,000. The increase in our regional share of transit commuters (9.5 to 10.0 percent), was not a statistically significant increase (95% CL) (though it was significant at a 90% CL). Commute times are stable, at about 27 minutes per one-way commute. Intra-county commute shares (% living and working in same county) has remained stable between 2000 and 2007, at about 72 percent intra-county commute. We also produce tables on housing affordability, poverty, race, and household vehicle availability, since those are topics of interest to us and our policy board. [CTPP] TODAY is DECEMBER 9: ACS 2005-2007 Data Release

I hope that everyone is enjoying looking at the new data from ACS. Most of the articles I've glanced at today have been about the diversity of people in suburbs, and the growth in non-English speaking populations. Since I have received several additional queries about the materials from last week's web training, here is one more email: FHWA hosted 2 web training sessions (Dec 2 and 5) on accessing the ACS data. The materials were the same on both dates. [CTPP] GET READY FOR DECEMBER 9: ACS 2005-2007 Data Release

In preparation for the release on December 9, FHWA have hosted 2 web training sessions (Dec 2 and 5) on accessing the ACS data. The materials were the same on both dates. If you were unable to attend, the session on Dec 2 was recorded, and is available: http://fhwa.na3.acrobat.com/p97212507/ The Census Bureau has released a list of the geographic areas for which data will be released on December 9. http://www.census.gov/acs/www/Products/users_guide/2005_2007/index.htm As a quick reminder, the population threshold for releasing tabulations from the 3-year ACS is 20,000. Approximately 60 percent of counties are included. This data release does NOT include census tracts or other "small area" data. The geographic units with complete coverage are limited to States and PUMAs. That is, tabulations for counties and places are like "swiss cheese." Even if a county has (for example) a population of 100,000, some of the cities in that county may have more than 20,000, and others fall under 20,000 population. Tables for the county will be issued, but only the cities over the 20,000 threshold will have data published.
