[CTPP] 2015 APDU Annual Conference: Sept 1-2, 2015

Hi everyone – Thought you’d like to see the program for the Association of Public Data Users conference. Please consider attending the conference! Of particular note, the session on integrating administrative records with the ACS. Deb Stempowski, Chief, American Community Survey is scheduled to speak. As you know, the Census Bureau needs to do all it can to reduce costs for the ACS and the next decennial census. This topic is very important! Some items like age and at least some questions about income (e.g. Social Security) seem very reliable from administrative records, does this mean that there will be MORE IMPUTATION of the journey-to-work and vehicle ownership questions if the field follow-up rate is reduced and replaced with use of administrative records? Assuming there is more imputation, how much will this increase in imputation “cost” in terms of reliability and usability for small area transportation zones? [CTPP] Call for Presentations – Webinar: Use of Multiple Census Data Sets for Transportation Planning

Just a friendly reminder… Data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau is used to develop various products that support transportation planning. Examples include the American Community Survey (ACS), Census Transportation Planning Products (CTPP), Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD), and Economic Census County Business Patterns. In order to address increasingly complex planning issues such as equity, multi-modal mobility, economic development and livability, transportation planners often incorporate data from multiple sources for their analyses. The CTPP Program and TRB Census Subcommittee will jointly sponsor a webinar on Thursday, August 13, 2015 from 2:30-4:30 pm ET on the use of multiple census data sets for transportation planning. [CTPP] Position at BTS for Director of Spatial Analysis and Visualization

Hi Everyone - I am just passing along a wonderful opportunity at USDOT in the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. As it states below, the "position reports to the BTS' Deputy Director" who is Rolf Schmitt. Rolf's past work includes working on the predecessor to the CTPP, called the UTPP (Urban Transportation Planning Package) and he has continued to work on behalf of USDOT on justification of the journey to work questions in the ACS. Elaine Murakami FHWA Office of Planning --------------------------------------------------- The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (OST-R) seeks a Director of the Office of Spatial Analysis and Visualization within the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). BTS is a principal federal statistical agency that develops key information on the extent, use, and consequences of all forms of transportation. BTS is responsible for leading the development of high quality transportation data and statistics, including geospatial data and information; and advancing their effective uses in both public and private decision making. This position reports to the BTS' Deputy Director, and oversees the staff responsible for compilation, quality assurance, publication, and development of tools for access and analysis of geospatial data in the National Transportation Atlas Database; supports the BTS Director's strategic management of transportation layer of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure; coordinates the development of transportation geospatial data standards, compiling intermodal geospatial data, and collecting geospatial data that is not being collected by other entities; conducts visual analytics and spatial and network analyses to support BTS programs; prepares maps and other visualizations for BTS publications and departmental initiatives; and provides leadership in advancing the state-of-the-practice in spatial analysis and visualization tools. Our office has had a lot of issues with FTP in the past. Eventually we downloaded an FTP client, Filezilla, which seems to have solved a lot of issues. Not sure if it would be applicable here, but thought I would mention it. Here is what i found to atleast shed some light on part 7, seepage 188. http://onlinepubs.trb.org/onlinepubs/conf/1995/cp4/cp4.pdf. I could not find any of my 1990 transview versions of the data. I know I have a complete set minus one state somewhere. If you can find one of the CDs even though you can not extract the data without the extraction software look on it to see if there are any PDF files with documentation stashed on it. Thanks, I also plan on using the 1990, 2000, and 2006-2010 to show the change in the percent and number of people and per household that commute to work in Manhattan from different MCD’s in NJ to see if there are any patterns. This is critical because since about 1996 we have spent about $3.5 Billion on a new LRT line, two new commuter rail connections to NY and a major commuter rail transfer station along with expanded ferry service. By going back to 1990 we can see how these investments have changed commuting patterns over 20 years. I have the data for the 2000 and 2006-10 so this is the missing piece.
