Elaine Murakami (FHWA) just passed me a powerpoint slide that I have to share. It was developed in reply to a request by Alan Pisarski at the CTPP Oversight Board meeting last week. Alan had wanted to SEE where the counties that DID NOT MEET the 3-year 20,000 population threshold were. Elaine worked with Supin Yoder also of FHWA and used a list of counties provided by Melissa Chiu of the Census Bureau to make the map. Besides being very informative it is possible to zoom into the map if you want to look at a particular state or area. I have seen lists of Counties before but seeing the map was quite revealing. When looking at the map and considering your areas, keep in mind that even if a county has met the population threshold of 20,000 it does not mean that all the tables for that county will be available in the ACS 3-year tables. [CTPP] New report on American Community Survey 2007 data, for San Francisco Bay Area

Hello CTPPers: The detailed 2007 American Community Survey data for journey-to-work and household characteristics was released by the Census Bureau on September 23, 2008. We completed our first report on the ACS 2007 for our region, on October 2nd. The 30 page report is here: http://www.mtc.ca.gov/maps_and_data/datamart/census/ The most interesting finding is a statistically significant (95% CL) increase in transit commuting, 2006 to 2007, from 315,000 to 336,000. The increase in our regional share of transit commuters (9.5 to 10.0 percent), was not a statistically significant increase (95% CL) (though it was significant at a 90% CL). Commute times are stable, at about 27 minutes per one-way commute. Intra-county commute shares (% living and working in same county) has remained stable between 2000 and 2007, at about 72 percent intra-county commute. We also produce tables on housing affordability, poverty, race, and household vehicle availability, since those are topics of interest to us and our policy board. [CTPP] Census News Brief

PRESIDENT TO NOMINATE ROBERT M. GROVES TO BE CENSUS DIRECTOR President Obama is expected today to nominate Dr. Robert M. Groves, Director of the University of Michigan’s Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, since 2001, to be director of the U.S. Census Bureau. Dr. Groves, also a research professor at the University of Maryland, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology (Dartmouth College), Master of Arts degrees in statistics and sociology (University of Michigan), and a doctorate in sociology (University of Michigan). He headed the Joint Program in Survey Methodology (University of Maryland/University of Michigan/Westat) from 1996-2001, and has been a visiting statistician and researcher at the U.S. Census Bureau. Dr. Groves received the National Association for Business Economics 2008 Julius Shiskin Memorial Award for Economic Statistics, in recognition of “innovative statistical research” that has improved the quality of household and business surveys in the areas of sample design, data collection methods, effects of nonresponse, and other factors that affect data quality. The award is given in recognition of “unusually original and important contributions in the development of economic statistics or in the use of statistics in interpreting the economy.” The nominee is widely published as the author or co-author of numerous books, monographs, journal articles, and book chapters, with an emphasis on survey methodology and design. He has received numerous awards and honors for his research and scientific developments and is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. Dr. Groves has assisted a wide range of government agencies (in the U.S. and abroad), universities and research organizations, and polling firms with survey design. He also has served on numerous advisory boards and National Research Council (National Academy of Sciences) panels (he currently chairs a panel reviewing Bureau of Justice Statistics programs). The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, led by Chairman Joseph Lieberman (I-CT) and Ranking Member Susan Collins (R-ME), will consider the nomination, which requires Senate confirmation. Sen. Thomas Carper (D-DE) and Sen. John McCain are the chairman and ranking member, respectively, of the committee’s Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services, and International Security, which has jurisdiction over Census Bureau programs. Re: [CTPP] Question about PUMS data and Geography

Martin, The 1% and 5% don't exactly refer to geography. They refer to the sampling fraction; the proportion of the total resondents who are included in the PUMS files. PUMS geography is based on PUMAs (Public Use Microdata Sample areas) for the 5% files; these have to be at least 100,000 population. The 1% file uses super-PUMAs, which have to be at least 250,000 in population size. Your state data center should be able to tell you what the PUMAs are for your state or area; they're also included in the 2000 census PUMS documentation. Hope this helps.
