Congratulations to Rolf Schmitt, Deputy Director of the Bureau of Transportation
Statistics, as the 2024 recipient of the TRB Robert E Skinner, Jr, Distinguished
Transportation Research Management Award. The award will be presented at the TRB Annual
Meeting on January 8, 2025.
Rolf started his career with USDOT in 1977. I didn’t know Rolf was a geographer by
academic training! Cool.

Thanks Chuck for the heads up. It will be interesting hear his talk. I
wonder if he will talk about the creation of the TRB Data Section, all
its committees and how it all came about. I learned a lot about how to
get things done and move things in the bureaucracies from Rolf stories.
I wonder if he will give the CTPP a shout out too. Rolf was a key player
in the early developments of the data and then helped popularize it by
giving us "free" CDs loaded with the data and software to mine it. Kudos
to Rolf.
