[CTPP] NCHRP 08-36 Task 98 report on Employment Data

[CTPP] new CTPP Status Report available

A new report (labeled as August) is now posted on the FHWA webpage in both HTML and pdf formats. http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/planning/census_issues/ctpp/status_report/ This issue includes a brief article (by me) about Summary File 1 and different ways to access the data. Thank you to all the CTPP listserv members who have helped others learn about alternative sites to access the 2010 Census results. We will have a training session on American FactFinder 2 to be conducted by Census Bureau staff in early October. I hope to have more information by tomorrow! We were told today that "there is no going back" to the legacy AFF for the new round of ACS data, with weights incorporating 2010 Census results . [CTPP] New SF1 report applications from MCDC

This new report generator from the Missouri Census Data Center that uses the Summary File 1 was shared with the State Data Center (SDC) network today, and Nathan Erlbaum of NYSDOT is sharing with you via me. These modules are similar to ones we have developed for the American Community Survey and 2000 census Summary File 3 data. You access both of the applications using a shared front-end menu app that lets you choose up to 4 geographic areas. The URL is http://mcdc1.missouri.edu/sf1_2010/sf1_2010_menu.html (there is a link to it at the top of the Quick Links navigation box which appears at the upper-right of most page on the mcdc web site.) This works almost identically to the menu front end for the ACS profiles. You select your geography and hit the "Generate Report" button. This produces the profile report with columns of data for each of the chosen geographic areas. At the top of the report page is a link to "SF1 Detailed Tables Menu". The geography selected is passed through; you now get to select your detailed tables before hitting the "Generate Report" button to view a report where each selected table is displayed for each selected geographic area. As with our other profile report products this one provides links to dynamically generated charts associated with the tables and has "drill-down" links that let you view the detailed table from the profile items were derived. [CTPP] requesting CTPP on-site training

Of course, the travel budget for conducting on-site training is limited, but the first thing to do is ASK. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Please send your training requests to Penelope Weinberger at AASHTO pweinberger(a)aashto.org She is coordinating the requests. The 3 people who are doing the training are: Penelope, Ed Christopher from FHWA Resource Center, and Liang Long from Cambridge Systematics. For a 1.5 day workshop, or even a 1 day workshop, it is best to have 2 people as the trainers. If you are looking for a computer-based training course, you will need to find a host with a computer training room. Often a State DOT has a training room that works. All the computers need web access, since the 2006-2008 CTPP data are accessed via the web, and not using mail-out CD's which we used for CTPP2000. After our first computer-based training session for this release of CTPP, 1.5 days was determined to be much better than a 1 day session. That is why the sessions in California are 1.5 days.
