Could someone shed some light on how reliable TAZ to TAZ flow
comparisons will be between the 2000 CTPP data and the 2006 - 2010
release? I am asking because as I delineate TAZ's I am trying to
prioritize my "rules" for delineation and wonder if TAZ continuity will
really be useful if the data won't be comparable anyway.
Of course we are keeping our smaller travel model zones as consistent as
possible, but our Census TAZ's will be in many cases quite a bit larger.

Hi Elizabeth
I was just looking through the CTPP mailing list and came upon your
posting of about having developed an ACS data import tool. I am very
interested in this and any other tools you may know of that will help us
get all the data we need from the Census to carry out our role as a
regional transportation planning agency. We want to establish a
comprehensive library about our region that we can draw on in the
development of various plans and to answer local agency questions. As
it is now, it appears that it is necessary to use the census search
tools.

Don't mind Steve--he is just giving a shameless plug for the NHTS ;-)
In the ACS you can get a vehicle occupancy for people commuting to work.
It takes a little work but you can calculate it from table B8301 (mode
to work). The trick is what assumption do you use for the 5-6 people
per car (maybe 5.5) cohort and the 7+ category. In 1990 we actually
knew the factor and it was around 0.3xxx. Try a few numbers and see
what you like, 7.2 people per car; 7.3, but I would not go over 7.5
Now for another shameless plug. One of the beauties of the CTPP
tabulations is that there is a vehicle occupancy table for the work
commuters. Unfortunately, with the 3-year CTPP it is only carried out
to 1 decimal so everything is 1.1. I believe the 5-year tab due out
sometime in 2013 will have 2 decimal places.
Back to the NHTS, it's strength here is that it has all trip purposes.

Problem is that this is a gross vehicle count at the household level, and
does not relate to commuting, so I don't think it solves the problem. The
vehicle occupancy issue relates to work trips. Perhaps there is a vehicle
count available elsewhere in ACS, though the suggestions advanced by others
should get the number to a pretty good level of precision.

We have put together the Census redistricting data and the 2010 block data
for some key variables. Drop me an e-mail and I'll give you the access code
to our FTP site so that you can download most states (including Ohio).
There are two types of files there- PDF files by state that have
county-level totals of a couple of key 2010 Census totals and zipped 2010
Census Block shape files. The block files have a naming convention like
Census2010-XX-Blocks.zip where XX would be a two letter designation of the
state.
The Census 2010 redistricting data variables that were joined to the TIGER
2010 Block data are defined as follows:
POPTOTAL- total population (permanent population + group
quarters population)
HHTOTAL- total dwelling units (occupied + seasonal + vacant)
HHOCC- permanently occupied dwelling units (total less seasonal
and vacant)
HHVAC- not permanently occupied dwelling units (vacant +
seasonal)
POPOCDU- total population (permanent + group quarters) /
permanent occupied dwelling units
HGHFLAG- record has a value if the number of persons/occupied
dwelling is greater than 5 (look for group quarters here)
LOWFLAG- record has a value if the number of persons/occupied
dwelling units is less than 1 (should never happen)
PCTPRMOCC- percent of dwelling units occupied by permanent
residents
POP1WHT- permanent + group quarters population reporting one
race that is white
POP1BLK- permanent + group quarters population reporting one
race that is black
POP1NAMR- permanent + group quarters population reporting one
race that is Native American or similar
POPOTHR- permanent + group quarters population reporting some
other racial composition (2+ races, Asian, etc.)
POPLATIN- permanent + group quarters population reporting to be
of Hispanic descent/affinity
POPNLATN- permanent + group quarters population NOT reporting
to be of Hispanic descent/affinity
PCTBLACK- percent of permanent + group quarters population
reporting to be a single race as black
PCTLATIN- percent of permanent + group quarters population
reporting to be a single descent as Hispanic
POPOVR18- permanent + group quarters population reporting to 18+
years of age
POPUDR18- permanent + group quarters population reporting to
under 18 years of age

I was wondering if anyone had a chance to figure out how to import the 2010
Redistricting data or the new 2010 demographic profile information into the
Access files on the http://www2.census.gov/census_2010/ , under

http://www2.census.gov/census_2010/03-Demographic_Profile/ . I have been
confused about this process myself. Does anyone know of any good guides to
help? Any ideas or suggestions? I have been using the new American
FactFinder 2 too, but that has been a slow and confusing process too.
