If the Michigan tract to tract files can be found for 1980 and/or 1990, I'd
sure be interested in having them.
I did not see anything on the attached Word file.

Are there any plans to post the 1990 and 1980 data online so that

Hi Everyone -
Yesterday, at the CTPP Oversight Board meeting, Brian McKenzie of the Census Bureau informed us that although this was originally planned for May 2015, the new date for the product release is "early August" 2015.
As mentioned in earlier posts regarding this file, it will include total workers, and a short list of travel modes: Drive Alone, carpool, transit, and other.

I must have been unclear, I mean all users who have clients for whom they use this data set.

Elaine,
I retained a print of the 1980 UTPP 'Data Dictionary' for the various tape files. Is this what you are seeking?

Hi Everyone -- (Ed started working on his response before me!)
ALL of the 1990 CTPP are available at BTS. The easiest way is to use a search engine and say "BTS 1990 CTPP".
JJ Zang our CTPP tech support will download the 1990 file documentation and send it directly to Chuck Purvis.
Re: 1990 CTPP outside of metropolitan areas. The Census Bureau was not confident about geocoding workplace locations outside of metropolitan areas at that point in time.
Re: 1980 CTPP When Nanda Srinivasan worked for the CTPP program, he collected a FEW files from States and MPOs. Most of these are flat ASCII files. We are looking for file layout information. If you have a copy of the file layout (that is, which columns are which variables), please send to me. This was back in the days where, the part 1 record was in 8 "segments". We can probably figure it out, by dumping records to print, but that sounds painful. My goal is to send these files to ICPSR at Univ of Michigan but they want files in SAS format.

Hi all!
Ed or Elaine will probably be able to answer my question, but all might (or might not) be interested.
I’m interested in developing a historical database showing tract-level data on total population, land area, and workers-at-workplace, for 1990, 2000 and 2006/10. I want this at a statewide (California) level, not just for the metropolitan areas. This is part of an ongoing research project on describing changes in rural/suburban/urban patterns in California (perhaps elsewhere, as well).
The 2006/10 CTPP includes a tract-level summary level, so I have been able to obtain a statewide, census tract level file of workers-at-work from Part 2 tables.
Similarly, about 11 years ago I extracted a block group-level file of population (Census SF3) and workers-at-work (CTPP 2000, Part 2), which is easily aggregated to census tract level.
The 1990 CTPP is the first “nationwide” CTPP product. The “statewide” element includes place-to-place, county-to-county for ALL counties in the USA, including rural (non-metropolitan) counties. On the other hand, the “urban” elements of the CTPP is restricted to metropolitan counties, and the finest level geographies are either TAZ, block group or census tract. Whether or not the TAZes aggregate to census tracts is unknown.
So, am I correct to assume that the Part 2 (workplace tables) from the 1990 CTPP do NOT include tract-of-work data for non-metropolitan counties? That’s my central question.
A secondary question is: is there a scanned/PDF version of the 1990 CTPP documentation? (I searched my old website, and I don’t think I have it in electronic format….)
I know that the 1980 UTPP was only completed for metropolitan areas, on a cost-reimbursable basis. Some MPOs in California didn’t participate in the 1980 program.
That’s all for now!

article focusing on the use of ACS data to estimate the impact of state
employees on Austin congestion plus more. The newletter can found at

You might want to check out the latest post from Terri Ann Lowenthal of The Census Project who nicely points out the importance of Census ACS data to transportation projects and the disconnects that exist when it comes to funding it, or the Census for that matter.

Houston-area residents have been wasting a lot of time in traffic. Fortunately, Federal Highway Administration funds have helped expand the US 290/Hempstead Corridor, the major artery bringing commuters to and from their jobs in and around the Lone Star State's largest city. I know this because Rep. John Culberson (R-TX) highlighted the $267 million in federal grant money for this project on his congressional website. Rep. Culberson is the new chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee that decides how much money the U.S. Census Bureau should get every year.
