[CTPP] Phillip Cox/D04/Caltrans/CAGov is out of the office.

[CTPP] SF1 API variable IDs

So I'm once again befuddled by the way the API handles variable IDs. I'm trying to retrieve data from table PCT20: "Group quarters population by group quarters type" from SF1. However the SF1 does not seem to follow the same variable formatting as the ACS 5-Year (it doesn't seem to use the _001E / _001M suffixes). In the example queries, the table "P001: total population" is retrieved using the ID 'P0010001'. Based on this I would've guessed that the 0001 designates the variable within the table in the same way that _001E does. However using this same style suffix on PCT20 results in an error. Does anyone know how these IDs are constructed? I haven't been able to find a variable list for SF1 that corresponds to this one<http://www.census.gov/developers/data/2010acs5_variables.xml>. [CTPP] Regional and Statewide Census Geodatabases

We are looking for a pre-configured 2010 Census Geodatabase with both linework and data attached for at least the state of Indiana, if not also including the surrounding states. Although all of the data can be downloaded from the Census Bureau on an as needed basis, we would like a more permanent copy in-house for our GIS needs and publication to our regional GIS website. We are hoping to find something pre-built, rather then downloading and compiling everything ourselves. Any assistance in the endeavor is appreciated. John-Paul Hopman Michiana Area Council of Gov'ts

[CTPP] API Request Table Codes

HERE IS a REPLY from the Census Bureau regarding the API forum and about the API itself. I am posting her response as I believe CB staff are not allowed to post to listservs. Elaine Murakami ------------------ Hi, API members are approved usually daily. There are no unapproved members currently in the membership queue. (If you are still having a problem getting approved, please contact Lisa Wolfisch Lisa.Wolfisch(a)census.gov<mailto:Lisa.Wolfisch(a)census.gov> directly). To answer some of the questions there - the API currently includes all of ACS 5 year 2010 and a portion of SF1 variables. These are listed at http://www.census.gov/developers/data/sf1.xml The API only allows a few variables per call at a time because we need to limit the work on the back end that the server does for each API call, but there is no limit on the calls an application can do. Note that the API pulls individual table cells and not tables. For example because Total Population exists as a cell in several tables, you can get to it with different variables as noted below, like <variable name="B02001_001E" concept="B02001. Race">Total:</variable> <variable name="B03001_001E" concept="B03001. Hispanic or Latino by Specific Origin">Total:</variable> Please send anyone my way for further help. [CTPP] API Request Table Codes

I've noticed that the table codes used in the API requests don't seem to match the table codes used in the table master lists or in American Fact Finder. For example the ACS 5-year table number for "Total Population" is B01003, but in the examples of API requests here<http://www.census.gov/developers/> the table number used to fetch population statistics for California and New York is B02001_001E, which the master list would have me believe is the table code for race (plus the "_001E" which I'm mystified by). Is there a separate list of table IDs that the API recognizes / am I using the wrong lists? Sam Ennis

This is pretty cool, but it seems there is a limit to pulling 5 fields at a time. I got a key and was just playing around a little, and thought I'd pull the race variables (P006) for a few counties. Using: http://thedataweb.rm.census.gov/data/2010/sf1?key={YOUR_KEY_HERE}&get=P0060… Yields a few results. However, using: http://thedataweb.rm.census.gov/data/2010/sf1?key={YOUR_KEY_HERE}&get=P0060… Yields an error screen with "error: error: unknown variable 'P0060005,P0060006'" I can do another query with: http://thedataweb.rm.census.gov/data/2010/sf1?key={YOUR_KEY_HERE}&get=P0060… And get the last few results. This appears to be a limitation we'd have to program around (although if I am incorrect and I'm doing something incorrectly, please let me know!). There is an XML file that shows the available tables (I have been using the 5 year ACS) and I have been doing it the dumb way - enter the required table and geog that i want in my browser address bar (along with my API key) and it spits out the table as a CSV file. I have not written any front end UI or anything, but for me knowing what table I want and at what geog, i found it far easier to use than AFF2.
