I just wanted to chime in with this discussion. In my region (Little Rock AR MSA) it's clear that the city estimates are heavily driven by census county estimates. The estimates for the largest five cities in our central county all show 0.9% growth 2010-2011. This is absurd; these five cities varied in the 2000-2010 interval between outright decline in one case and 63 percent growth in another. The building permits and all other local evidence suggests that they are not all growing at 0.9 percent in unison. Therefore I express my agreement that there's something very wrong with the place/MCD estimates released on July 1. Since these estimates are fundamentally misleading, they are worse than nothing at all. [CTPP] Census allowing for apps

This came across the census news today. This could be the start of something big. Web Transformation Census Application Programming Interface (API) — The Census Bureau is releasing its first ever API. This online service provides the building blocks for developers to design online and mobile apps, such as interactive maps, charts and databases, using a variety of Census Bureau statistics. The API provides statistics down to the neighborhood level (tracts and block groups) from the 2010 Census Summary File 1 and the 2006-2010 American Community Survey. With these two datasets available in the form of an API, database editors and other developers have easier access to a wide variety of timely, localized information, including population totals, age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, home ownership, education, income, employment, commuting and occupation. The API is currently undergoing beta testing and is scheduled for public release in July. [CTPP] Save the Date: Training opportunity for Chicago area users.

Hi All, CTPP training will be offered in Chicago on August 6th and 7th 2012. Registration details will be available after July 15th, but it will be free and open to transportation planners and data users. Registration will be limited. CTPP training is a day and a half of data, data issues, census, CTPP and hands on training and work with the data and CTPP products. You will gain an in depth understanding of how and when to use the data set and software, along with a deep knowledge of the pitfalls and advantages. A laptop with internet access (to available wifi) and a CD reader is recommended. The training will be from 12 - 4:30 on Monday and 8:30 - 4:00 on Tuesday. [CTPP] NTD Urbanized Area

NTD recently released their guidelines, their Allocation of NTD Data/2010 Census form letter, and 2 spreadsheets showing the urbanized areas in the US and their corresponding populations. These are the UZAs and population that must be used. On March 27, 2012 the Census Bureau released the list of new Urbanized Areas and Urban Clusters. For transportation related activities these boundaries have broad and far reaching affects. Recognizing that it is impossible to address each individual situation and question separately, staff from the Federal Highway Administration. Federal Transit Administration, Census Bureau and others will conduct a 2-hour webinar on Boundary Issues and Transportation. Participants in the webinar can expect to learn about the various Transportation related boundaries, where and how they interact with the federal programs and the steps that state and local agencies need to take to address the boundary related requirements. Time will be allowed for questions and discussion, and additional resources will also be made available for downloading. If you are interested in boundaries from a transportation perspective, have a particular question or need to learn about them, this webinar is for you. To make sure your questions get addressed you can send it send them to ed.christopher(a)dot.gov up to the close of business the day before the before the webinar, otherwise they will be handled on a first come basis during the webinar. [CTPP] ACS Hearing Tuesday

Here's the latest update on the Congressional ACS hearing... If any of our CTPP friends attend or sent in testimony and want to report back I am sure those on this listserve would be interested in hearing from you. -----Original Message----- From: Terri Lowenthal [mailto:terriann2k(a)aol.com] Good afternoon, Census Project stakeholders. Just a reminder that the congressional Joint Economic Committee will hold a hearing tomorrow (June 19) at 2:30PM to review the economic consequences of eliminating the Census Bureau's American Community Survey and other federal surveys (such as the quinquennial Economic Census). The Census Project encourages stakeholders in the Washington, DC area to attend this hearing in person, to demonstrate strong interest in and support for the ACS and other core Census Bureau programs. See the link on my Facebook page for more details about the hearing. However, if you are unable to attend, the committee will web case the hearing. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), who is presiding over the JEC hearing, will hold a short press conference at noon tomorrow at the House press "Triangle," to call more attention to the serious consequences of the House vote to eliminate the ACS and to encourage cooler heads to prevail. In addition to Rep. Maloney and a few other members of Congress, Wade Henderson (President/CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights) and senior representatives from the National Association of Realtors and National Electrical Manufacturers Association will speak. For those of you who don't follow the legislative agenda closely, there is still no word on when the U.S. Senate will consider the FY13 Commerce, Justice, and Science Appropriations bill. Due to a whole range of election year politics, it might not before the election. However, at some point before this Congress adjourns, lawmakers must agree on a funding bill for the Census Bureau for fiscal year 2013, and they must resolve the issues of ACS funding, voluntary versus mandatory ACS response, and adequate funding for 2020 Census planning and the 2012 Economic Census. So we must use the time now to continue educating all lawmakers (both chambers, both parties!) about the importance of the ACS and the serious policy implications of eliminating the survey or making response voluntary.
